News Topical, Digital Desk : The ruling coalition led by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has won a historic victory in the parliamentary elections. PM Takaichi's party secured a two-thirds majority. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated them on their victory.
According to Japanese media, he achieved this victory due to his popularity. In an interview with the public television network NHK after his landslide victory, Takaichi said he was now ready to adopt policies that would make Japan strong and prosperous.
What did PM Modi say?
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Takaichi, saying, "Sanae Takaichi, heartiest congratulations on your historic victory in the House of Representatives elections. I am confident that under your able leadership, we will take the friendship between India and Japan to new heights."
Won 316 seats out of 465
Takaichi's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) alone had secured 316 seats by Monday morning , far exceeding the absolute majority of 261 seats in the 465-member lower house of Japan's bicameral parliament, NHK reported, citing vote counting results.
This is a record since the party's founding in 1955. It surpasses the previous mark of 300 seats won by the late Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone in 1986.
It will help in moving the agenda forward.
While the LDP lacks a majority in the upper house, the significant increase in the lower house will help Takaichi pursue a right-wing agenda aimed at boosting Japan's economy and military capabilities as tensions with China escalate and she seeks to improve relations with the United States.
Takaichi said she would aggressively pursue her targets while trying to garner support from the opposition. "I will be flexible," she said. She called early elections just three months after taking office, hoping to turn the tide with her popularity.
