
News Topical, Digital Desk : Jammu and Kashmir Police has once again emerged as the leading force in the country in terms of gallantry awards, winning a record 127 gallantry medals on the occasion of Independence Day 2025.
Among the awardees, Inspector General of Police (Security) Sujeet Kumar and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar, Dr GV Sandeep Chakravarthy have been awarded the prestigious gallantry medals for their exemplary leadership, professionalism and fearless service in one of the most sensitive areas of India.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced that Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel have received the highest number of gallantry medals across the country. These awards include gallantry awards, President's Medal for Distinguished Service and Medal for Meritorious Service.

A total of 1,090 medals will be awarded this year, including 233 gallantry medals, 99 President's Medal for Distinguished Service and 758 Meritorious Service Medals. In the police category, 226 officers and personnel have been selected for gallantry medals, 89 will be awarded the President's Medal for Distinguished Service and 635 will be awarded the Meritorious Service Medal.
Of these, the highest number of gallantry medals have been awarded to personnel from Jammu and Kashmir, followed by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Border Security Force (BSF). Of the total 233 gallantry medals awarded across the country, 152 have been awarded to personnel serving in Jammu and Kashmir, of which 127 medals have been awarded to the Jammu and Kashmir Police alone – a staggering statistic that underlines the dangerous and high-stakes environment in which the force operates.

Other notable recipients from Jammu and Kashmir Police include Awantipora SSP Sajjad Shah, Sopore SSP Iftikhar Talib, South Srinagar SP Shabbir Ahmad Khan, Hazratbal SP Hilal Khalid Bhat. Late DSP Humayun Muzammil Bhat, who was martyred during a fierce encounter in Kokernag, was honoured posthumously for his supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
After this, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) got 20, Border Security Force (BSF) got 16, Uttar Pradesh Police got 17 and Chhattisgarh Police got 14 gallantry awards. This year, a total of 1,090 personnel of police, fire service, home guard and civil defence, and correctional services were honoured across the country. These include 233 gallantry medals (GM), 99 President's Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM) and 758 Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM).
