News Topical, Digital Desk : In light of the situation in West Asia following the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah convened an important meeting at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Center (SKICC). Religious leaders, civil society members, representatives of business organizations, legislators, ministers, and senior administrative officials attended the meeting.
Speaking at the meeting, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed deep sorrow and condolences over the deaths in Iran. He said that the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, cannot be described in words. He said that the late Supreme Leader was a true sympathizer of the people of Kashmir and always maintained good relations with India. Recalling his two visits to Iran as Minister of State for External Affairs of the Government of India and as a special envoy of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he said that relations between India and Iran have always been strong.
Appeal for peaceful mourning, instructions to the administration to be sensitive
The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and harmony in Jammu and Kashmir, respecting the sentiments of the people. He appealed for a peaceful and responsible way of expressing condolences. Those present at the meeting urged the administration to treat protesters and mourners with empathy and understanding, and to allow people to gather to express their condolences.
Will take up the cases of detained youth: CM assures
Those present at the meeting demanded the release of those detained in recent days and the cancellation of FIRs against the youth who had taken to the streets solely to mourn the death of their spiritual leader. The Chief Minister assured them that he would raise the matter at the highest level and seek a lenient approach. He said he did not want his people, especially the youth, to put themselves at risk.
Efforts underway to bring back Kashmiri students stranded in Iran
Regarding the Kashmiri students stranded in Iran, the Chief Minister stated that he is in constant contact with the Ministry of External Affairs regarding their safety and safe return. He explained that due to flight cancellations in the region, the students are being sent to safe locations by land. He also assured that the relevant college authorities in Iran will be requested through diplomatic channels not to penalize students wishing to return to India.
Discussion was also held on the supply of essential commodities
Some civil society members raised the issue of rising prices of essential commodities and petrol. The Chief Minister directed district deputy commissioners to closely monitor stock and supply situations and take strict action against those involved in hoarding and exorbitant pricing. The meeting began with prayers of Fateha for Ayatollah Khamenei and others who lost their lives in the attacks on Iran.
