News Topical, Digital Desk : IIT Madras on Wednesday launched India's lightest active wheelchair 'YD One' built using indigenous technology. YD One is the country's first indigenously developed mono tube rigid frame wheelchair designed on par with the world's best wheelchairs, officials said.

This wheelchair is easy to lift into cars, autos or public transport

Built as per international standards, the YD One is perfectly adapted to each user's body, posture and daily mobility needs. Weighing only nine kilograms, this wheelchair is easy to lift, handle and place in cars, autos or public transport.

According to V Kamakoti, director of IIT Madras, wheelchairs are often seen as a universal symbol of disability across the world. This perception needs to change. He said wheelchairs, when designed correctly, are not a burden but a means of independence, mobility and full participation in society.
