News Topical, Digital Desk : Uttarakhand's rural traditions and social customs are once again in the news. The village council of Kharsi village in the Chakrata block of Dehradun district has taken a significant decision, setting limits on the amount of jewelry women can wear. It has also decided to completely ban the consumption and serving of foreign liquor at weddings and other events in the village.
This decision was made unanimously at a Panchayat meeting held in Kharsi village on Monday. Villagers, women, and Panchayat representatives attended the meeting. The Panchayat decided that women and daughters of the village will now be allowed to wear limited jewelry at social and religious events. This rule will apply not only to women in the village but also to daughters coming from outside.
According to the Panchayat, women can wear earrings, ear rings, jhumkis or earrings, nose rings, mangalsutras, and rings. Other heavy or ostentatious jewelry will be prohibited. The Panchayat stated that the decision aims to curb the tendency toward ostentation in society and maintain the tradition of simplicity.
Unnecessary expenses in weddings are increasing due to competition
The village head explained that increasing ostentation and competition in the village had led to unnecessary expenses at weddings, leaving many families financially burdened. This decision will promote equality and simplicity in society.
The Panchayat has also decided to ban foreign liquor. Foreign liquor will no longer be served at any wedding or function in the village. Villagers say that alcohol contributes to family discord and antisocial behavior, so this decision has been taken with social harmony and safety in mind.
A similar decision was taken in Chakrata block also.
It's worth noting that a similar decision was made last October by the Kandhad village panchayat in the Chakrata block, allowing women to wear up to three pieces of jewelry. Now, the Kharsi village panchayat has furthered this tradition, further clarifying the boundaries. Villagers say this decision is a positive step toward preserving the village's culture and strengthening social unity. The panchayat has appealed to all families to adhere to this decision.
