News Topical, Digital Desk : Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has taken a major decision to abolish all cabinet ranks. The 20 percent cut in salaries and allowances has been postponed until September 30, 2026. Effective immediately, chairmen, vice-chairmen, and advisors of boards, corporations, and commissions will no longer receive the cabinet rank privileges. The government has directed secretaries of all departments to implement this decision immediately. This decision was taken with the aim of reducing expenditure and moving towards a self-reliant Himachal.

The letter signed by Kulwinder Singh, Joint Secretary, General Administration Department, Himachal Pradesh Government, said - I am directed to inform that with a view to streamline the administrative process, the status of 'Cabinet Rank' has been reviewed and it has been decided by the Government that the facility of 'Cabinet Rank' currently provided to the Chairman/Vice Chairman/Vice Chairman (Deputy Chairman), Principal Advisor/Political Advisor etc. of various Boards, Corporations and Commissions is abolished with immediate effect.

What else is there in the Secretary's order?

The letter stated, "In addition, 20 percent of their salary/monthly remuneration will be withheld until September 30, 2026. Please ensure the necessary action in this regard promptly and communicate these instructions to all concerned under your administrative control." The above order was issued by Kulwinder Singh on March 17.

The Himachal government has given cabinet rank to Tourism Corporation Chairman and Nagrota Bagwan MLA RS Bali. Furthermore, Sunil Kumar Bittu, the Chief Minister's political advisor, Nandlal, Chairman of the 7th Finance Commission, and Bhawani Singh Pathania, Chairman of the State Planning Board, have also been given cabinet rank. Naresh Chauhan, the media advisor, has also been given cabinet rank. Kehar Singh Khachi, Vice Chairman of the Forest Corporation, is also on this list. Gokul Butail, the Chief Minister's IT advisor, has also been given cabinet rank. These leaders with cabinet rank are given all the facilities available to ministers, including a government vehicle.
