Women celebrate both these fasts with special devotion. Both these festivals fall on the Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha, due to which they are called Teej. The fast falling on the Tritiya Tithi of the month of Sawan is called Hariyali Teej and this year Hariyali Teej will be celebrated on 27th July.
At the same time, the fast that falls on the third day of Bhadrapada is called Hartalika Teej. This year the fast of Hartalika Teej will be observed on 26 August.
Importance of both fasts
In both these fasts, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are worshipped with rituals. Married women observe this fast for the long life of their husbands and a happy married life. Whereas, unmarried girls worship Shiva-Parvati and observe fasts on both these dates with the wish of getting a suitable groom.
Hariyali Teej is a festival of union
According to religious beliefs, after many births of penance, Goddess Parvati accepted Lord Shiva as his wife on this day. The festival of Hariyali Teej is the celebration of the reunion of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It is believed that observing the fast of Hariyali Teej brings happiness and prosperity in married life.
Women observe this fast with the wish of a long life of their husband. On this day, married women dress up and do the sixteen adornments. After this, Shiva-Parvati are worshipped. On this day, women dress up in green clothes, bangles, bindi and mehndi etc. which are considered symbols of good fortune.
Hartalika Teej is a symbol of rigorous penance
Hartalika Teej is one of the most difficult fasts. This fast is kept without drinking water. According to mythology, Mother Parvati performed severe penance in a dense forest without eating or drinking any food or water to get Lord Shiva as her husband.
They made a Shivlinga out of sand and worshipped it. It is believed that the fast of Hartalika Teej was first observed by Goddess Parvati with the wish of unbroken good fortune. Married women observe this fast for unbroken good fortune and long life of their husbands. This fast is observed by making a Shivlinga out of clay or by keeping an idol of Shiva-Parvati.
