The glory of Maa Kushmanda is mentioned in Devi Bhagwat Purana. It is said that there was darkness in the beginning of creation. The mother created the universe by removing that darkness with her gentle smile. That is why she is called Kushmanda Devi.

Worship method of Maa Kushmanda

On the fourth day of Navratri, after doing your daily chores and bathing, take a vow to fast for Maa Kushmanda. After this, purify the place of worship with Gangajal and place the idol of the mother on a stool covered with a yellow cloth.

While meditating on Goddess Kushmanda, offer yellow clothes, flowers, fruits, Malpua, incense, lamp and Akshat. After this, 'Om Kushmandayai Namah', 'Kushmanda: Ain Hree Devyaayi Namah' and 'Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu Maa Kushmanda Rupen Sansthita. Namastesyaye Namastesyaye Namastesyaye Namo Namah.' Worship and worship Mother Kushmanda with mantras.  

Recite Durga Saptashati and Durga Chalisa. Finally, do the Aarti of Maa as the puja is not considered complete without it. Then after offering the food, ask for forgiveness.
