News Topical, Digital Desk : A tragic accident in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, shook the entire area. On February 18th, around 5 p.m., in the Chiluataal police station area, 12-year-old Kanhaiya Chaurasia fell into a drain under construction while learning to ride a bicycle. An iron rod protruding from the drain pierced his stomach. The child screamed in pain as people tried to rescue him.
Kanhaiya was a fifth-grade student. His father, Shyam Sundar Chaurasia, said that his son was very fond of cycling. On February 14th, he bought him a new bicycle. Kanhaiya was learning to ride with his friends. On the day of the accident, he was cycling near Ward No. 5, Manbela, Rapti Nagar Extension Colony, and was returning home when the accident occurred.
Iron rods buried in open cable trenches
At the site of the accident, underground cable trenching work was underway. The drain was covered with an RCC slab, but for some reason, the slab had been removed. The iron rebar inside was protruding. As soon as the bicycle spun out of control, Kanhaiya fell straight into the drain, and the rebar pierced his stomach.
Bystanders, daring, pulled the child out of the iron rod and laid him on the road. He was covered in blood and writhing in pain. Meanwhile, his father, upon receiving the news, rushed to the scene from the market.
Treatment lasted for one and a half hours, life could not be saved
Family members and locals immediately rushed Kanhaiya to BRD Medical College. He was treated in the emergency room for about an hour and a half. Doctors tried their best, but due to severe internal injuries, Kanhaiya could not be saved. As soon as the news of his death reached his parents standing outside, they erupted in tears.
Shyam Sundar Chaurasia had three sons, Kanhaiya, the eldest. His younger brothers were 8-year-old Kishan and 6-year-old Shiva. The family's financial situation was modest. Shyam Sundar sold vegetables to support his family, while his wife, Sadhna, was a homemaker.
Contractor accused of negligence
Kanhaiya's father has alleged that the contractor did not remove excess iron rods and that the drain cover was left open. Had safety measures been put in place in time, this accident would not have occurred. He has demanded strict action against the culprits.
Regarding this matter, Anand Vardhan, Vice Chairman of the Gorakhpur Development Authority, stated that under the Raptinagar Extension Housing Scheme, cable trenches were constructed on both sides of a 24-meter road. Work began on April 3, 2023, and was completed on June 25, 2025.
Upon prima facie finding of negligence, the services of GDA's Technical Supervisor Aditya Srivastava have been terminated and the suspension of the concerned junior engineer Sanjay Gupta has been recommended.
On the Divisional Commissioner's instructions, an investigation committee has been formed, led by the Additional District Magistrate (City) and the Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD), to investigate the entire matter and submit a report. The administration has also assured the family of all possible government assistance.
Security system under question
This tragic accident has raised serious questions about the safety of construction projects. If the drain had been properly covered and the protruding iron rods removed, the 12-year-old's life might have been saved. Now the question remains: who will take responsibility for such negligence?
