
News Topical, Digital Desk : India has abstained from voting in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on a resolution demanding an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. The 193-member UN General Assembly passed the resolution introduced by Spain by a majority.
149 votes were cast in favour of the proposal
The resolution received 149 votes in favour. It demanded all parties to respect an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire. The resolution also demanded the immediate, dignified and unconditional release of all persons held hostage by Hamas.
India was among the 19 countries that abstained from voting. 12 countries voted against the resolution. India's Permanent Representative P. Harish said India is concerned about the deepening humanitarian crisis and condemns the loss of civilian lives.
India has previously abstained from voting on the Israel-Palestine issue
He said India has earlier also abstained from voting on the Israel-Palestine issue. He reiterated India's stand that there is no other way to resolve conflicts except through dialogue and diplomacy. There should be a joint effort towards bringing the two sides closer.
