News Topical, Digital Desk : North India is gripped by a cold front in the first week of the new year. Dense fog and a cold wave have disrupted normal life in the plains, including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, while fresh snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir and the upper reaches of Himachal Pradesh has attracted tourists. According to the India Meteorological Department ( IMD) , these weather conditions will persist for the next few days.

Delhi & NCR and Uttar Pradesh

  • Due to dense fog in the morning and evening, visibility is very low.
  • Minimum temperature around 8-9 degrees Celsius, maximum 16-18 degrees.
  • Cold wave conditions continue at different places, effect of cold day.
  • Air and rail traffic affected, many flights delayed.
  • Fog in many districts of UP like Lucknow, Varanasi, Prayagraj, causing traffic jams and risk of accidents.

 Punjab, Haryana

  • Very dense fog (visibility less than 50 metres) at many places in these states.
  • Cold wave likely to continue in different areas till January 4-6.
  • Minimum temperature well below normal.

Jammu and Kashmir

  • Fresh snowfall on New Year in Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam and upper areas.
  • It is very cold during 'Chillai Kalan', but tourists are enjoying the snow.
  • Possibility of light rain/snowfall again on 5-6 January.

Himachal Pradesh

  • Light to moderate snowfall in Manali, Rohtang Pass, Lahaul-Spiti.
  • Cold increased in Shimla and Kullu, but tourist places remained crowded.
  • Cold wave at different places.

Dense fog will prevail in more than 30 districts including Uttar Pradesh.

Severe cold is sweeping across the state. There's no sign of relief for the next few days. Fog wasn't prevalent in the capital on Saturday, but the cold wave resulted in a daytime temperature of 16.3 degrees Celsius. According to the Meteorological Department, a cold wave alert has been issued for several districts, including Lucknow, for the next three days, while dense fog is forecast for approximately 30 districts, including Banda, Chitrakoot, and Prayagraj.
