News Topical, Digital Desk : Passengers at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) have been advised to check their travel plans on November 20 as the airport will close both its runways for six hours, according to Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), the airport's operator.
According to a statement issued by MIAL, both runways at the airport—RWY 09/27 and RWY 14/32—will be unavailable for operations from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on November 20. This closure is part of the airport's mandatory annual post-monsoon maintenance work.
This is the main purpose of maintenance
Airport management stated that this scheduled maintenance work is performed annually after the monsoon season ends. This process includes technical inspections of the runway surface (pavement), cleaning and repairing the drainage system, and updating airfield lighting and markings on the runway. The primary objective of this maintenance is to enhance the safety of air operations and ensure that the runway remains compliant with international standards.
Here's a plan to keep inconvenience to a minimum.
To minimize passenger inconvenience, MIAL planned this maintenance work well in advance. All airlines and related stakeholders were notified six months in advance of the closure, allowing them to plan their flight schedules and personnel deployments accordingly.
'Notice to Airmen' has been issued
Additionally, a 'Notice to Airmen' (NOTAM) has been issued to inform pilots and air traffic control. MIAL stated that this annual maintenance is part of CSMIA's 'Safety First' policy, which is committed to maintaining safe and reliable air travel under all circumstances. It is noteworthy that CSMIA is one of the world's busiest single-runway airports.
