News Topical, Digital Desk : A special CBI court in Ahmedabad on Monday sentenced Central Excise and Service Tax officer (Excise Officer) Kaushik Karelia to five years in prison in a disproportionate assets case. He was also fined Rs 63 lakh.

The case dates back to when Kaushik was an appraiser officer at the Kandla Special Economic Zone (KSEZ). He is currently serving as a Central Excise and Service Tax Inspector in Bhavnagar. His wife, Pooja Karelia, has been sentenced to one year in prison and fined 50,000 rupees for aiding the crime.

The case was registered in 2013

The CBI registered the case on September 30, 2013, alleging that the accused had amassed assets disproportionate to their known sources of income. Following an investigation, the CBI filed a charge sheet against the accused couple in 2014.
