News Topical, Digital Desk : Union Minister of State for Power Shripad Yesso Naik said on Saturday that peak power demand this summer could reach 270 gigawatts. He added that the ongoing crisis in West Asia will not impact regular power supply.
Electricity demand will increase in summer
The Ministry of Power had projected peak electricity demand to reach 277 gigawatts last summer. Peak electricity demand in June 2025 was 242.77 gigawatts. Last month, peak electricity demand was 243.15 gigawatts, up from 238.06 gigawatts in February 2025, according to government data.
All records broken last year
Peak power demand reached an all-time high of 250 gigawatts in May 2025. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event, the Union Minister said, "There is an emergency situation due to the West Asia crisis. There are some impacts here and there. But in the power sector, we are moving forward in such a way that there will be no disruption in supply."
The price of domestic cooking gas (LPG) was raised by ₹60 per cylinder on Saturday, the second rate hike in less than a year, as oil companies are passing on a part of the rise in global energy tariffs following the West Asia crisis to consumers.
