News Topical, Digital Desk : The Election Commission says that illegal material worth over Rs 408 crore, meant to influence voters, has been seized in four states and one Union Territory last month. The Election Commission had announced the schedule for the assembly elections in Assam, Keralam, Tamil Nadu, Bengal and the Union Territory of Puducherry on March 15. While the Electronic Seizure Management System (ESMS) was activated on February 26.
The Commission said that since its activation, illegal transactions worth Rs 408.82 crore have been detected, including Rs 17.44 crore in cash, liquor (16.3 lakh litres) worth Rs 37.68 crore, drugs worth Rs 167.38 crore, precious metals worth Rs 23 crore and other gifts worth over Rs 163.30 crore. Between March 15 and 25, 70,944 complaints were registered using the cVIGIL application.
70,831 complaints were resolved
Of these, 70,831 were resolved and 67,899 complaints (95.8 percent) were resolved within 100 minutes. To prevent electoral irregularities, the Commission has deployed 5,173 flying squads in the poll-bound states and Union Territories to expedite the redressal of complaints. Over 5,200 surveillance teams have been deployed for surprise checks at key locations.
