News Topical, Digital Desk : A magnitude 3.1 earthquake was recorded in Bhutan on Thursday morning. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported that the tremor occurred at 4:29 am. The quake's depth was only 5 kilometers, making aftershocks likely.

This isn't the first earthquake to hit Bhutan this year. Two previous quakes struck Bhutan on September 8, 2025. The first quake, measuring 2.8, was recorded at 12:49 p.m. with a depth of 10 kilometers. The second quake, measuring 4.2, struck at 11:15 a.m. Both tremors were felt in different parts of Bhutan.

According to earthquake experts, surface earthquakes are considered more dangerous because their tremors reach the ground quickly and with greater intensity, which increases the possibility of damage.

Bhutan is a highly earthquake-prone region.

Bhutan is located in the Himalayan mountain range, one of the world's most earthquake-prone regions. According to the Asian Disaster Reduction Center (ADRC), Bhutan falls within Indian seismic zones IV and V, the most seismically active regions. Past earthquakes have proven that earthquakes remain the most significant natural hazard in Bhutan.

There is fear of other dangers in Bhutan

Bhutan is vulnerable not only to earthquakes, but also to a variety of other natural disasters. Glacial lake outbursts, landslides, high winds, flash floods, and wildfires frequently cause damage. In 2011 and 2013, strong winds damaged thousands of rural homes. A magnitude 3.1 earthquake was recorded in Bhutan on Thursday morning.
