News Topical, Digital Desk : A 6-year-old British boy was detained in connection with the drug seizure in Mauritius. It is alleged that 14 kg of marijuana was recovered from his suitcase. The child was detained along with seven others at Sir Shivsagar Ramgoolam Airport on Sunday.
According to The Telegraph, the group was allegedly carrying more than 161 kilograms of marijuana, worth 1.6 million pounds (about Rs 18.8 crore). These people had hidden the marijuana inside their suitcases. All those detained were British citizens, including this child. 24 packets of drugs wrapped in clear cellophane were found in his luggage.
Along with the child, his mother was also taken into custody
The group landed at Mauritius International Airport on a British Airways flight from Gatwick, where it was intercepted. The boy's mother was also arrested and 17kg of marijuana was also found hidden in her bag. One of the suspects is said to be a Romanian living in Britain. He was allegedly carrying 32 packets of marijuana.
Officials raid hotels
The consignment of drugs was recovered during a joint operation at the airport by the Customs Anti-Narcotics Section (CANS) and Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU). Officials believe the group to be part of an organised crime network smuggling drugs from Europe to Mauritius.
Officers also carried out several raids on hotels housing British nationals, as police had received clues that some foreign travellers were carrying drugs. Nothing was found at these places during the searches and no arrests were made.
However, the child was unaware of the contents of his bag. He was sent back to the UK on Wednesday and is living with his father.
