After her husband's death, the victim's elderly wife filed a police complaint. She told the police that the fraudsters stole their life savings, leaving her husband deeply traumatized. He died from the shock.

According to the FIR, her husband was taken to the hospital on October 22nd, unconscious at home, where he was declared dead. Police said he was "deeply upset" by the incident.

How did such a big fraud happen?

Investigators said the scam began on August 16, when the elderly couple received a call from a man claiming to be an "encounter specialist" with the Mumbai Police. The caller told them that their bank accounts and Aadhaar card information had been misused in a money laundering case involving a private airline.

"The victim then received a call from another fraudster who claimed to be an IPS officer from the CBI's Delhi office. The caller said the couple would be put under 'house arrest' or 'jail arrest' in connection with a money laundering case," said Swapnali Shinde, senior inspector of the Pune Cyber Police.

Trapped by cyber criminals

The conmen asked the couple to keep their phone camera on, placing them under "digital arrest" for three days. During this time, they extracted all their bank account and Aadhaar card information. They forced the couple to transfer money to five different bank accounts. Once all the money was transferred, the call was disconnected. Only then did the couple realize they had been scammed.
