
News Topical, Digital Desk : The Delhi government is looking for alternative facilities to reduce the number of prisoners in Tihar Jail. To this end, the government's home department has held meetings with officials of various land-owning agencies such as the Land and Development Office, Revenue Department and Delhi Development Authority (DDA). The purpose of these meetings is to shift the existing Tihar complex to another location and look for land for the development of a new jail complex, as announced by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta in her budget speech.
Giving information, an official said that the officials will visit Tihar next week to see the existing facilities and consider ways to reduce the crowd of prisoners. During the visit, they will see how the crowd can be reduced according to the existing facilities in Tihar till the new jail complexes are built.
How many prisoners are there in Tihar?
In fact, Tihar has more than double the capacity of prisoners. According to official figures, Tihar Jail has a capacity of 5,200 prisoners, but currently it houses 12,945 prisoners, which is more than double its capacity. Tihar is considered one of the largest prison complexes among the 9 central prisons.
'Cellular Jail' to be built in Delhi
As part of its plan to decongest prisoners, the Delhi government has also started the tender process for the construction of a new high-security prison in Narela. The architectural design of this prison will be inspired by the historic 'Cellular Jail' of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
An official said that Narela jail is also a part of reducing the crowd of prisoners in Tihar. After issuing the tender, the government plans to prepare this jail in 21 months. After this, about 250 to 300 notorious prisoners will be shifted from Tihar to Narela.
