What is a shelf cloud?
According to weather experts, shelf clouds are often a sign of a major storm approaching. These clouds appear with thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds and heavy rain. Although a shelf cloud is not a tornado itself, the weather can become even worse after its appearance.
When these clouds appear, there is usually a sudden drop in temperature and darkness along with strong winds. According to local radio station WTOP, a storm warning remained in effect for Washington DC and surrounding areas until 9 pm, and a flood warning remained in effect until late at night.
