According to the India Meteorological Department, dense fog has enveloped states like Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan. Visibility is significantly reduced in the morning, affecting road, rail, and air traffic.
Yellow alert issued for dense fog in Delhi
The minimum temperature in Delhi on February 5th is expected to hover around 7-9 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature could reach 21-23 degrees. Clear skies and sunshine are expected during the day, but cold and foggy mornings and evenings are making it difficult for people to leave their homes. The International Monetary Fund (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for moderate to dense fog in Delhi, and this condition is expected to persist for the next few days.
The situation is similar in Uttar Pradesh. Dense to very dense fog is prevailing from western Uttar Pradesh (such as Ghaziabad, Meerut, and Noida) to eastern parts. Minimum temperatures in many districts are between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius, and the effects of the cold wave are clearly visible. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of dense fog in Uttar Pradesh until February 7th.
Light rain or hail is also forecast in some areas, which could further intensify the cold. Strong, chilly winds are blowing, making the chill even more intense. Farmers and travelers are particularly affected, as fog has made morning commutes hazardous.
Snowfall on peaks in Uttarakhand, fog warning in plains
Light snowfall fell on the Himalayan peaks in Uttarakhand for the third consecutive day. Several major peaks, including Chardham, Hemkund Sahib, and Auli, were covered in snow. Heavy snowfall stranded 35 vehicles at Sadhna Top in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir. An overnight operation was carried out to rescue them safely.
According to the Meteorological Center, the weather is expected to remain dry in most districts of Uttarakhand on Thursday. A warning has been issued for dense fog in Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, Dehradun, Pauri, and Nainital. A yellow fog alert has been issued.
Cold wave continues in the valley
Meanwhile, severe cold is prevailing in Pahalgam and Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir. The weather remained clear in most parts of the state on Wednesday. The tourist destinations of Gulmarg and Pahalgam are experiencing severe cold, with night temperatures dropping. A cold wave continues in the valley. According to the Meteorological Center, Srinagar, light snowfall may occur in some parts of the state on the night of January 6th.
Orange alert issued for avalanche in Himachal
An orange avalanche alert has been issued for Kinnaur, Kullu, and Lahaul-Spiti in Himachal Pradesh. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for dense fog in the lower and plain areas of the state until February 8. Clear weather is expected in most parts of the state on February 4 and 5.
Chance of snowfall in high altitude areas
Light rain and snowfall are expected at isolated locations in the higher and hilly areas on February 6th. Clear weather is expected again on February 7th and 8th. Further, widespread rainfall and snowfall are expected in the higher elevations on February 9th and 10th due to the active western disturbance in the state.
