News Topical, Digital Desk : The largest toll station in China's Anhui province witnessed massive traffic jams on Monday, October 6, as millions of travelers returned home after the eight-day National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holidays. Videos of queues of vehicles at the Wuzhuang toll station are going viral on social media.

The Wuzhuang toll station has 36 lanes, but the traffic jam was visible, with red taillights flashing as vehicles lined up in rows trying to cross the toll gate. More than 120,000 vehicles were expected to pass through the toll station on its final day.

Why was there such a long jam?

Drone footage showed numerous vehicles traveling across multiple lanes to pass through the toll gate. The Mid-Autumn Festival is a significant family gathering in China, and this year it coincided with the National Day holiday. As a result, the holiday was extended from its usual duration, from October 1 to October 8.

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism reported that about 888 million trips were made during the holiday this year, compared with 765 million during the seven-day holiday last year. Heavy traffic jams at the Wuzhuang toll station reminded many drivers of the Chinese New Year rush.

There has been a massive traffic jam in China before.

China has experienced similar incidents of massive traffic jams, the most famous being the 12-day jam of 2010. On August 14, 2010, a massive traffic jam stretching more than 100 kilometers on the Beijing-Tibet Expressway brought life to a standstill. Thousands of vehicles and passengers were stranded on the highway for 12 days due to several trucks breaking down along the route.
