News Topical, Digital Desk : There are many epidemics spread across the world which have caused serious damage to our health. Covid-19 is also one of those pandemics. Since the arrival of Corona Virus, many people have lost their lives. At the same time, some people were able to recover from this disease but later they had to face many diseases. Recently a research has been done, which has revealed that Covid-19 and flu increase the risk of breast cancer.

Scientists from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center (MECCC) and Utrecht University found that respiratory illnesses caused by certain common viruses (such as coronavirus or flu) can revive cancer cells that had previously hidden in the lungs during breast cancer.

Research done on rats

Scientists conducted research on mice. Breast cancer cells were already hidden in their lungs. These cells are also called dormant cancer cells. When these mice were infected with coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) and the flu virus Influenza, the dormant cancer cells became active again. Scientists observed that these cells started growing slowly in a few days. Only two weeks had passed when its symptoms started becoming clearly visible in the lungs.

Treatment should be done immediately

Regarding this, Dr. Julio, a scientist at Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center, said that people who have already had cancer should get immediate treatment for respiratory diseases. They should get vaccinated on time . He said that during Covid, when many people got infected, the condition of some cancer patients worsened, which made it clear that inflammation in the body caused by the virus can re-awaken cancer cells.

This protein activates cancer cells

These cancer cells are like the embers left in a fire that has been extinguished. They grow further through viruses. During this time, scientists found that when a virus enters the body, a protein called Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is formed. This IL-6 awakens the hidden cancer cells again. If medicines that control IL-6 are given, then the cancer that spreads again due to the virus can be stopped.

Study done on more than five lakh people

Let us tell you that this research has also been tested on humans. Scientists surveyed the data obtained during Covid. They studied more than five lakh people and found that among the cancer survivors who had Covid, 487 people had a higher risk of dying from cancer than those who did not have Covid. The highest risk was seen in the first year of Covid.

This effect also occurs in other parts of the body

It was also found that women who had breast cancer first and then contracted Covid had a 50% higher risk of metastasis to the lungs. On this, scientists have said that the same effect occurs in other cancers and other parts of the body as well.
