News Topical, Digital Desk : Carbide guns in Ghazipur and surrounding districts were originally designed to scare away animals that damaged crops. While they benefited farmers in rural areas for a while, a report from BHU regarding this same carbide gun is worrying. According to the report, this gun has blinded approximately 65 children in Ghazipur and Purvanchal. More than 30 of these children are under the age of 14, while 10 are young people aged 18-23. Doctors say that surgery is the only option left.

According to the doctor, these patients came from various areas, including Muhammadabad, Bhavrakol, Zamania, and Khanpur. It's difficult to estimate the extent of the carbide gun's impact. All of them are in critical condition, and surgery is the only option.

More than 10 victims in Ghazipur

In such a situation, all these affected children were from Azamgarh, Ghazipur, Mau, Ballia, Jaunpur and other districts. In Ghazipur too, more than 10 such affected children had reached Ghazipur Medical College on the day of Diwali and were treated by eye surgeon Dr. Sneh Lata Singh herself. She told that since it was Diwali day, they were preparing for the puja, but in the meantime, they received several emergency calls due to which they had to leave their puja. In this, she told that about 10 children had arrived with injuries from carbide guns. Of these, the condition of the eyes of three to four children had become very critical and all were sent to a higher center for treatment.

Many patients are more serious

When Dr. Snehlata Singh, eye surgeon at the Ophthalmology Department, was contacted about this, she said that around 10 cases had come to Ghazipur during Diwali and Chhath Puja. Of these, about 7 to 8 were mild cases, with burns on the hands or face. However, there were three to four patients who were quite critical and were referred to a higher center for treatment, as they could require a cornea transplant.

The gun was made after watching YouTube

The children explained that they had built a carbide gun using two pipes after watching YouTube. They used it by filling it with water and then lighting a carbide pellet with a lighter. They explained that they had experimented with it several times without any problems. However, there were times when the pellet would bounce back instead of forward, causing them problems.

He said that three to four serious patients who came had ruptured corneas. Some people had suffered trauma due to the injury, which caused corneal injury and some had ruptured corneas, and most of the injuries were burns. Because carbide is a thermochemical injury. It has a thermal and chemical thermonet. Therefore, it causes double injury. In this, not only the cornea gets burnt due to heat, but also the chemical which reacts with the eyes, it creates a base. If this happens along with the injury, there is also blood clotting or damage in the eyes, which causes a lot of problems to the victims.
