News Topical, Digital Desk : Manisha Koirala has strongly criticized the police's violent action against young protesters in Nepal. In a post on Instagram, the actress shared an emotional photo showing a blood-stained shoe and also gave a message on the serious situation prevailing in the country.
Manisha wrote on her Instagram handle, “Today is a black day for Nepal - when people's voice against corruption and demand for justice were answered with bullets.”
What happened in Nepal?
Thousands of Nepali youth, mostly Generation Z (Gen G), are protesting in Kathmandu and other cities. They are demanding the government to lift the ban imposed on popular social media platforms and take strict measures against corruption.
On Monday, the movement took a tragic turn when security forces opened fire on protesters in several districts. According to Nepal's Ministry of Health and Population, at least 19 people were killed. At the same time, more than 250 people were injured.
The protesters marched carrying the national flag, sang the national anthem and expressed their anger against corruption and censorship. The protests escalated when the crowd gathered at the parliament and set fire to its entrance, forcing the police to use water cannon, tear gas and finally real bullets.
Why protest against the government?
The protests began after the Nepal government blocked 26 unregistered social media platforms, including Facebook, YouTube and X. This left millions of users cut off from the internet and angry at the action.
Following a Supreme Court order last year, authorities had given tech companies a week to register locally, appoint a compliance officer and establish a point of contact.
Officials say the move was to regulate digital platforms as they were forced to take this step due to concerns of online fraud and money laundering. Telegram was also suspended in July due to similar concerns.
