
News Topical, Digital Desk : Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has ordered to increase the compensation announced for the families of those killed in the Chinnaswamy Stadium accident to Rs 25 lakh. Earlier, the government had announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each.
How many people died in the stampede?
11 people died and 33 others were injured in this stampede. This incident happened when an unexpectedly huge crowd gathered to celebrate RCB's IPL victory, which was much more than expected. The stadium had a seating capacity of about 35,000 but a crowd of about 2 to 3 lakh people gathered on the spot. Due to which this accident happened and people lost their lives.
CM Siddaramaiah had informed about the crowd that the government and the cricket association had not expected such a large number of people. The crowd of around one lakh could be handled at Vidhana Soudha, but the situation turned horrific at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The unexpected increase in the number of attendees made the crowd control measures fail, leading to a stampede-like situation.
Most of the people who died in this incident were youngsters who had come to celebrate the victory of the cricket team. Many injured are still undergoing treatment.
CM has ordered a magisterial probe
Many families lost their future due to this incident. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has ordered a magisterial inquiry to ascertain the cause of the stampede. "We will take appropriate action based on the findings," he said, adding that the report would be submitted within 15 days. He assured the public that no political rhetoric would influence the investigation.
After this incident came to light, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar reached Bowring Hospital and met the injured and expressed condolences. He appealed to cricket fans to give first priority to safety in public events in future.
