News Topical, Digital Desk : Panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh will now be delayed. This news is a blow to candidates preparing for the elections scheduled for this year. The current Panchayat term ends on May 26, 2026. Indications of a delay in the Panchayat elections come from a letter from the State Election Commission. According to this letter, issued on April 17, 2026, the State Election Commission stated that the process of duplication and computerization of voters will begin on April 21, and will continue until May 28, 2026. 

According to the State Election Commission's letter, after computerization on May 28th, the work of numbering polling stations/places, mapping of wards of polling stations, voter numbering, SVN allocation, downloading of voter lists, making photocopies, etc. will take place from May 29th to June 9th, 2026. The final publication of electoral rolls will take place on June 10th.

In such a situation, when the final voter list will come on June 10 and the formation of the Backward Class Commission is still pending, then the elections will not be held on time.

What else is there in the letter of the State Election Commission?

In the letter issued by State Election Commissioner Raj Pratap Singh, it has been said that action will be taken by the District Magistrate/District Election Officer (Panchayat and Urban Bodies), Electoral Registration Officer and Assistant Electoral Registration Officer.

It has been said in the letter that the concerned offices will remain open on public holidays falling during the revision of electoral roll and the work of electoral roll will be completed as per the prescribed time table.

Earlier, Om Prakash Rajbhar, the UP government's Panchayati Raj Minister, had also indicated that the elections would not be held on time, although he blamed the Samajwadi Party and other opposition parties for this. Meanwhile, several petitions regarding the Panchayat elections have also been filed in the Allahabad High Court.
