News Topical, Digital Desk : Oscar-winning singer-composer AR Rahman often makes headlines for his music and singing, but he's currently in the news for his statement. The singer's statement has sparked a controversy that hasn't subsided even after he apologized. Recently, Shabana Azmi's brother and cinematographer Baba Azmi reacted to the controversy.

Baba Azmi disagrees with AR Rahman's communal comments and cites the Aamir Khan -starrer Lagaan as an example.

What did Baba Azmi say on communal bias?

In a recent interview, Baba Azmi was asked if he, too, had faced communal bias because he was Muslim. Baba Azmi disagreed. In a conversation with Just Too Filmy, Baba Azmi said:

I don't think so. It could just be a passing phase, it could be a small percentage, but no. When you're watching a movie, you don't think about whether a Muslim is acting in it or not. You're either so engrossed in the story, or you don't like the movie at all.

Example given of Lagaan movie

The songs for the movie Lagaan were composed by AR Rahman, with lyrics written by Javed Akhtar. He cited Lagaan as an example and said:

You don't care who wrote the songs in Lagaan, who wrote that aarti. Whether it's Muslim or Hindu. It doesn't matter. You listen to it, and you either like it or you don't, that's it. There's nothing beyond that. At least for now, I think we're a long way from anything like that, and that's the way it should be.

AR Rahman's controversial statement

In an interview with the BBC Asian Network, AR Rahman had implied that communal bias was preventing him from finding work in the industry. This statement went viral on social media and divided opinion. Many celebrities, including Kangana Ranaut, expressed disagreement with the composer.
