News Topical, Digital Desk : In India, 1,951 incidents of aircraft GPS tampering have been reported in just two years. These figures are truly shocking. The central government revealed this information in response to a question in Parliament.

GPS is responsible for providing information about an aircraft's location, direction, and altitude. Any disruption to this system could lead to a major disaster. It's worth noting that GPS plays a crucial role in aircraft flight.

Tampering with GPS data can have serious consequences

It's worth noting that tampering with GPS data can cause aircraft to lose direction. Therefore, the possibility of a major incident cannot be ruled out. Recently, incidents of GPS spoofing and tampering have been reported at Delhi, Kolkata, Amritsar, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai airports, raising concerns among air travelers.

In response to a question in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol stated that the Wireless Monitoring Organization is investigating the matter. According to reports, on November 10, the DGCA issued an SOP for real-time reporting of GPS spoofing/GNSS tampering around Delhi Airport.

For the second time, the government has admitted that GPS data has been tampered with.

It's noteworthy that this is the second time in just 12 days that the central government has acknowledged incidents of GPS spoofing. Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ramamohan Naidu previously told the Rajya Sabha on Monday that the AMSS at Delhi's IGI Airport was compromised on November 7th.

It should be noted that operations at Delhi's international airport were affected for more than 12 hours on November 7. More than 800 flights were delayed and 20 were cancelled.

Union Minister Naidu stated that the threat of ransomware and malware attacks is increasing globally. AAI is adopting advanced cybersecurity measures to protect its critical infrastructure.
