News Topical, Digital Desk : Air India has ordered 30 additional fuel-efficient Boeing 737 MAX jets to meet rapidly growing travel demand in the domestic and regional markets. The order includes 20 Boeing 737-8 and 10 Boeing 737-10 aircraft, taking Air India's total order book with Boeing to nearly 200 aircraft.
The announcement was made jointly by Boeing and Air India during the annual Wings airshow in Hyderabad. Air India finalized the purchase of 20 737-8 jets this month, while the order for 10 737-10 aircraft was previously undisclosed on Boeing's orders and deliveries website. Both purchases were made using existing options.
Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Air India, said, “This additional order of 30 Boeing 737 aircraft is part of our comprehensive fleet strategy, which aims to firmly position Air India for the future as a world-class global carrier, just as India needs and the world expects.”
These new aircraft are equipped with CFM LEAP-1B engines, which deliver exceptional fuel efficiency, passenger comfort and high reliability in single-aisle operations. The 737-8 model will be used for high-frequency domestic and short-haul regional flights, while the larger 737-10 model will be able to carry more passengers at a lower per-seat cost.
Since privatization, Air India has added approximately 170 aircraft to its fleet through new aircraft deliveries, strategic leasing, the Vistara merger, and the reactivation of older grounded aircraft. This initiative is contributing significantly to fleet modernization and capacity expansion.
According to Boeing's Commercial Market Outlook, India and South Asia will need approximately 3,300 new aircraft over the next two decades, 90% of which will be single-aisle aircraft. This order further strengthens Air India's strong position in India's rapidly growing aviation market.
