News Topical, Digital Desk : It has been a month since the Ahmedabad plane crash. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), which is investigating this case, has released its preliminary report. This report has revealed that the cockpit voice recording during the Air India accident in Ahmedabad on June 12 has recorded an important conversation between the two pilots during the engine failure. A picture after this plane crash has now surfaced, in which it is clearly visible that the landing gear lever is in the 'DOWN' position. In such a situation, many people would also want to know what it means, so let us tell you.

What is a landing gear lever?

The landing gear lever being in the 'DOWN' position in any aircraft is a very important technical aspect, which plays an important role during the takeoff and landing of the aircraft. The landing gear is an important part of the aircraft, which includes wheels, struts and other supporting systems. It supports the aircraft during take-off, landing and taxiing on the ground. The landing gear can usually be "down" or "up", and there is a landing gear lever in the cockpit to control it.

What does it mean if the landing gear lever is DOWN?

When the landing gear lever is in the DOWN position, it means that the pilot has given the order to lower the landing gear. It also means that the landing gear is fully out and in the locked position. This position is usually used during takeoff and landing, as the aircraft needs support on the ground during these phases. When the landing gear is down, the aircraft can safely taxi (move), take off or land on the ground.

Under what circumstances is the landing gear lever DOWN?

Let us tell you that at the time of takeoff, the landing gear lever is in the 'DOWN' position. This means that the plane is still on the ground and is running on the runway with the help of wheels. As soon as the plane rises in the air (after rotate and climb-out), the pilot moves the lever to the "UP" position to pull the landing gear up. This stores the gear inside the plane, which reduces air resistance (drag) and saves fuel consumption. Let us tell you that if the landing gear lever is not put "UP" immediately after takeoff, it can lead to an abnormal situation. For example, if the pilot forgets or there is a technical fault, the gear may remain down, which affects the speed and fuel efficiency of the plane.

Let us tell you that during or before landing, the pilot moves the landing gear lever back to the DOWN position. This is usually done 5 to 10 minutes before landing, when the plane is in the process of landing. Lowering the landing gear helps the plane to land safely on the ground. If the gear is down, the plane may have to do a belly landing, which is a very dangerous process.
