News Topical, Digital Desk : The war that began on February 28, 2026, between the United States, Israel, and Iran is still ongoing, engulfing the entire Middle East. While the United States and Israel are jointly attacking Iran, Iran is retaliating strongly. Meanwhile, a report has emerged assessing the damage America has suffered in the Middle East.
What did the analysis reveal?
A report by the US-based think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies and a BBC analysis showed that most of the damage was caused by Tehran's retaliatory attacks in the week following the coordinated US and Israeli airstrikes on February 28.
While the full scale of the damage to US assets in the Gulf region is not yet clear, the $800 million figure gives an idea of what a prolonged conflict could cost the US.
'The damage could be greater than anticipated'
"The extent of damage to US bases in the area has been underreported," Mark Cancian, co-author of the CSIS study, was quoted as saying in a BBC report. "While the damage appears significant, the full extent of the damage will not be known until more information is available."
Iran targets US bases
Iran has targeted US air-defense and satellite-communications systems in Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, and other Gulf countries. The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system radar at a US air base in Jordan was severely damaged. According to a CSIS review of Defense Department budget documents, this radar system cost approximately $485 million.
A study found that damage to buildings and other infrastructure at US airports in the Middle East caused an estimated $310 million in additional losses to Washington, DC.
BBC analysis of satellite imagery has revealed that Iran struck at least three air bases more than once. Satellite images show Kuwait's Ali al-Salim base, Qatar's Al-Udeid base, and Saudi Arabia's Prince Sultan base all suffering new damage at different stages of the conflict.
The death toll exceeded 3,000
The US has also lost 13 military personnel since the war began and the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency estimates the death toll to be around 3,200, of which 1,400 are civilians.
