His post moved thousands of people. In the post, he described the shocking corruption and harassment by the police.
K. Shivakumar, a retired chief financial officer of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), shared his experience on LinkedIn in September after his 34-year-old daughter, Akshaya, died of a brain hemorrhage. The post has now been deleted.
'I paid bribes everywhere'
In the post, Shivakumar alleged that he had to pay bribes at every stage—for an ambulance, a copy of the FIR, the funeral, and even for a death certificate (to corporation staff). He accused an officer and a policeman at the Bellandur police station of demanding bribes and behaving arrogantly. He wrote, “I had the money, so I gave it, but what can poor people do?”
'No mercy, no humanity'
Shivakumar questioned the lack of humanity shown by the officials. He asked, "Don't police officers have any family or feelings when they demand money or speak rudely to someone who is already in shock and distress?" He also said that he had to go to the BBMP office for five days to get his daughter's death certificate, and that too only after paying more than the official fee.
SI and constable suspended
People shared posts on X, tagging the Bengaluru City Police and the Whitefield DCP, demanding action based on Shivakumar's traumatic experience. The DCP's office responded from its official 'X' account, saying the matter would be thoroughly investigated and appropriate legal action would be taken against the culprits. On Thursday, the DCP's office said in a post, "A police sub-inspector and a police constable from Bellandur police station have been suspended with immediate effect in connection with the incident mentioned in Shivakumar's post." "The police department will not tolerate such inappropriate or uncivilized behavior under any circumstances," the post added.
