News Topical, Digital Desk : Actor-turned-politician Vijay has been dealt a major blow by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Karur stampede case. The CBI has summoned TVK chief Vijay for questioning on January 12th. The case relates to the stampede at Vijay's rally on September 27th last year, which claimed the lives of 41 people.

The incident occurred in Velusamypuram, Karur district. A massive crowd had gathered for a rally organized by Vijay's party, the Tamilaga Vetti Kazhagam (TVK). According to officials, the venue had a capacity of about 10,000 people, but approximately 30,000 gathered. The situation worsened when safety measures were not followed and there were no proper arrangements for food and drinking water.

What was the main reason for the stampede?

Negligence in gathering the crowd was cited as the primary reason. Vijay was scheduled to arrive at 12 noon, but arrived around 7 pm. This delay only increased the crowd. When his campaign bus arrived, a wave of excitement swept through the crowd. Many climbed trees, rooftops, and electric poles to see Vijay. Fearing electrocution, officials cut the lines.

The deceased received compensation

The day after the stampede, Vijay made a major announcement. He announced a compensation of ₹2 million to the families of each deceased and ₹2 million to the injured. He also postponed his statewide tour. TVK's Karur West District Secretary, Mathiyazhagan, was arrested by police on charges of lapses in order to maintain order. However, a court later refused to extend his detention and he was released.

What is happening in the investigation now?

The case has been handed over to the CBI on the orders of the Supreme Court. Several senior party leaders have already been questioned. Now, Vijay himself has come under scrutiny. According to sources, Vijay will be questioned about the rally's planning, crowd management, and security arrangements. Vijay has previously stated that he will fully cooperate with the investigation. This case could pose a major challenge for TVK ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
