Rang De Basanti was banned
When the film hit the theatres, it was well received, but it was also banned earlier. On the 20th anniversary of Rang De Basanti, director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra spoke about the challenges faced during the film's release. He said, “Rang De Basanti was also banned. We fought it and then finally the government understood the purpose of the film. In fact, the then Defence Minister, Honorable Pranab Mukherjee, had seen the film and the three chiefs of the Army, Navy and Air Force also saw the film in a theatre in Delhi and later he became the President of India. So the matter had reached that level.”
The director spoke on those who make films out of fear.
Rakesh Omprakash Mehra further said, "You don't tell stories thinking whether they will be allowed or not, if you think like that then the stories will never come out. If you think about the result and not about the process, then I think social cinema has always been there and will always be there, which raises social issues and the issues of citizens and society."
