The left engine suddenly blew out during takeoff and appeared to hit the plane's fuselage, according to new images released Thursday by the National Transportation Safety Board.
The NTSB's preliminary report found fatigue cracks and signs of overstress in one of the pylons holding the engine. According to the report, these cracks were located in the rear mount of the left pylon, which connects the engine to the wing.
What did the investigating agencies tell about the cause of the crash?
The NTSB further stated that a fracture was also found in the bearings that help secure the connection. The report noted that no previous fractures or signs of damage were found in the part connecting the engine to the wing.
The plane was built in 1991 and had recently been serviced. Investigators said the accident occurred when an engine exploded during the final moments of takeoff on UPS Flight 2976.
The plane was just 30 feet above the ground when it crashed into a UPS warehouse and recycling facility just south of the Louisville airport.
An inspection found cracks in the engine
Initial reports compared the accident to the deadly 1979 American Airlines crash, which killed 273 people when the left engine failed during takeoff at Chicago O'Hare Airport.
The NTSB is currently recovering and analyzing the cockpit voice and flight data recorders. Investigators are also examining the maintenance history of the 34-year-old cargo plane, which underwent repairs in Texas just weeks before the crash.
