After US President Donald Trump announced 34 percent tariff on China, Beijing has appealed to cancel it immediately. China is America's third largest import market and if Washington does not cancel the tariff, then strict steps will be taken against it.

A spokesperson for China's Commerce Ministry said Beijing firmly opposes the US' retaliatory tariffs and will take firm measures to safeguard its rights and interests. History shows that raising tariffs cannot solve America's own problems. It harms US interests and endangers global economic growth, industrial and supply chain stability.

Called the tariff America's bullying

  • China said there are no winners in a trade war and protectionism leads nowhere. It said the US has set these tariffs based on arbitrariness and unilateral evaluation, which is inconsistent with international trade rules. These tariffs seriously harm the legitimate rights and interests of relevant countries and are a typical symbol of unilateral bullying.
  • A spokesperson for China's Commerce Ministry said the US should immediately cancel these tariffs and fully resolve any differences with its trading partners through discussions. After the latest announcement, the total tariff on China has reached 54 percent. This is close to the 60 percent that Trump had threatened during the election campaign.
  • It is worth noting that China is the third largest exporter to the US after ASEAN and the European Union. In 2024, there was a product trade of about $ 582.4 billion between the two countries, in which the value of American products exported to China was $ 143.5 billion and goods imported from China was about $ 438.9 billion.

A big blow to the global economy: European Union

According to AP, EU President Ursula von der Leyen said on the 20 percent US tariff that this is a big blow to the global economy and its consequences will be dire for millions of people. Groceries, transportation and medicines will become expensive. This is especially harming the most vulnerable citizens.

However, Leyen acknowledged there are serious flaws in the global trading system and the EU is ready to respond to these as well as work with the US to address them.
