6 people died and dozens were injured when a private bus going from Siliguri to Gangtok fell into a ditch. The accident happened on Saturday afternoon. This has been confirmed by the Kalimpong District Officer. He has said that police and civil officials are investigating the incident.
The injured have been rushed to hospitals in Rangpo, Singtam District Hospital and Gangtok in Sikkim for treatment. Police and official teams are busy identifying the dead and injured.
The bus narrowly escaped falling into the river
According to the information, a private bus (Quality) bearing the number WB 73C 4535 registered in West Bengal fell from Bhote Bhir in Rangpo area of Kalimpong district into the Teesta river. It narrowly escaped falling into the river as it got stuck in a pile of sand.
The bus was going from Siliguri to Gangtok. In the accident, 6 people lost their lives on the spot, whose bodies have been recovered. Identification of the dead is underway. Police is trying to find out the cause of the accident.
The number of dead may increase
Police told news agency PTI that the dead and injured are being identified. The deceased include a woman. The death toll is likely to rise as the condition of many injured passengers is very critical. He said that some tourists were also among the passengers on the bus at the time of the accident.
