Donald Trump today targeted India, China and Brazil over tariffs. Trump called the three countries 'huge tariff-makers' and said that his government will not let them act arbitrarily anymore. 

Trump also declared that we will not allow this to happen anymore because we will give priority to America.

BRICS countries are trying to harm us: Trump

In fact, speaking to House Republicans at a Florida retreat, the US President said that the three countries are founding members of the increasingly influential BRICS bloc and are only looking out for their own interests. Trump also said that the three countries are trying to harm us for their best interests.

Threatened to impose tariffs

Trump said that we are going to impose tariffs on foreign countries and people who want to harm us. Trump said that they mean to harm us, but they basically want to make their country good.

Talked to PM Modi last night

Trump's statement comes at a time when he spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the phone last night and the PM is also scheduled to meet Trump in Washington early next month. The two leaders spoke on the phone on Monday night, in which 'illegal immigrants' were discussed. However, it is not clear whether tariffs were on the agenda in this conversation.

Talk of imposing taxes on other countries instead of citizens

Trump further said that we will very soon make America more prosperous and more powerful. After taking oath last week, he said that instead of taxing our citizens to make other countries prosperous... we will tax foreign countries to make our citizens prosperous.

Asked to set up plant in America

Trump said that if companies from foreign countries like India, China or Brazil want to avoid high tariffs, they will have to build their plants in the US. He also told the Republicans about his plan to impose tariffs on steel, aluminum, copper and other materials needed by the US military. Trump said,

High tariffs on goods imported into the US were also an issue in Trump's election campaign. He also threatened to impose "100 percent tariffs" on BRICS countries.
