There was an uproar after the Indian Consulate in Seattle, USA refused to grant emergency visa to Indian-American politician Kshama Sawant.
The Indian Embassy in the US said that despite the embassy office being closed, some people forcibly entered inside, due to which a law and order situation arose.
The embassy said it was forced to call in the relevant local authorities as "some individuals" tried to enter the consulate premises without permission after office hours and refused to leave.
"Today, the Consulate was forced to deal with a law and order situation arising out of the unauthorised entry of some individuals into the Consulate premises after office hours. Despite repeated requests, these individuals refused to leave the Consulate premises and behaved in an aggressive and threatening manner with the Consulate staff," the embassy wrote in a post on Twitter.
Indian-American politician Kshama Sawant makes allegations
The Indian embassy did not provide any details about who the people who barged into the embassy were, but Indian-American politician and former Seattle city council member Kshama Sawant referred to the incident, writing that she, along with members of the Workers Strike Back, "peacefully pleaded" at the Indian consulate to demand an explanation as to why her visa request was rejected three times.
Sawant alleged that she was denied a visa because her name was on the "reject list". She said she wanted a visa to visit her ailing mother in Bengaluru, but her request was rejected thrice.
Told the 'inside story' of the embassy incident
"My husband and I are at the Seattle Indian Consulate. They gave my mother an emergency visa as she was very sick. But rejected my visa, literally saying my name was on the "reject list". And refused to explain why. We are refusing to leave. They are threatening to call the police on us," Kshama Sawant wrote in a post on X from inside the embassy on Thursday.
In another post, he wrote, "A consulate official said I was being denied a visa because I was on the Modi government's "reject list". It's obvious why. My Samajwadi Nagar Parishad office passed a resolution condemning Modi's anti-Muslim, anti-poor CAA-NRC citizenship law. We also passed a historic ban on caste discrimination."
