The government has issued a notification for the formation of the 23rd Law Commission. Its term will be three years. Serving judges of the Supreme Court and High Court will be its chairperson and members. The term of the 22nd Law Commission ended on August 31.

 

The commission will have four full-time members

According to the order issued by the Law Ministry through a gazette notification on Monday evening, the commission will have a full-time chairperson and four full-time members including a member secretary. The secretary of the Department of Legal Affairs and the secretary of the Legislative Department will be its ex-officio members.

According to the order, the commission cannot have more than five part-time members. The serving judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts working as chairperson and members of the commission will work on a full-time basis till the date of retirement from the Supreme Court or High Court or till the term of the commission ends (whichever is earlier). The time spent by them in the functioning of the commission will be counted as actual service.
