New York. The United Nations has strongly condemned the Israeli attack in Rafah. UN chief Antonio Guterres said that many innocent civilians were killed in this attack who were seeking refuge to escape this deadly conflict. He said that 'terrorism must be stopped'. He also admitted that there is no safe place in Gaza.
In a post on the social media X, Guterres said, "I condemn Israel's actions, which killed a large number of innocent civilians who were seeking refuge from this deadly conflict. There is no safe place in Gaza. This horror must stop."
45 dead, 200 injured, UN expressed concern
At least 45 people were killed and 200 others injured in an Israeli attack on a displaced persons camp, CNN reported, according to the government media office in Gaza. Soon after the attack, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that two senior Hamas officials had been killed in an attack targeting a Hamas compound.
'There really is no safe place'
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk expressed his concern over further civilian deaths in Gaza. He said that Israel's attacks on Sunday show that there is truly no safe place there.
"The images from the camp are horrific and show no apparent change in the methods of warfare used by Israel. Many civilians have already been killed. Sunday's attack proves once again that there is truly no safe place in Gaza," he said in a news release on Monday.
'A huge mistake has been made'
In his address to the Israeli Parliament Knesset on Monday, Netanyahu said, "Despite our best efforts not to harm the innocent people involved in this incident, unfortunately a tragic mistake occurred last night. We are investigating the matter."
