News Topical, Digital Desk : The visit of the US team to India for the proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) talks from August 25 may be postponed. An official said that now these talks can be postponed for further time. So far five rounds of talks have taken place between India and the US regarding the BTA.
Sixth round of talks proposed
The sixth round of talks is proposed during 25-29 August in India. Meanwhile, news agency Reuters quoted a media report saying that the US team's visit to India has been cancelled.
The US has recently announced
The US has recently announced a massive tariff of 50 percent on the import of Indian goods. In view of this, the importance of the postponement of this meeting increases significantly
The US is demanding greater market access in politically sensitive sectors such as agriculture and dairy, which has been rejected by India as it affects the livelihood of small and marginal farmers.
India-US set target to take trade to $500 billion
India has made it clear that it will not compromise on the interests of farmers and livestock farmers. The US and India have planned to complete the first phase of the BTA by the end of October 2025. Both countries have set a target to take bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030, which is currently $191 billion.
America imposed tariff on India
The 25 percent tariff imposed by the US on Indian goods has come into effect from August 7. At the same time, the additional 25 percent tariff imposed on India for purchasing crude oil and military equipment from Russia will come into effect from August 27. India's exports to the US have increased by 21.64 percent between April and July in the current financial year.
'India's diplomatic position strengthened after Trump-Putin talks'
The recent meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin has given India an even better diplomatic position, which is likely to give it economic and strategic benefits, foreign affairs expert Robin Sachdev has said.
He said that this dialogue is largely a victory for Putin. It can also be beneficial for India as the threat of additional sanctions seems to be averted for the time being.
Sachdev said the Trump-Putin talks in Alaska, while not broadly successful, proved to be a strategic victory for Putin and provided India a favourable opportunity in global diplomacy.
Ukraine, America and Europe wanted a ceasefire first
He said, "It was a victory for Putin. His approach of preferring a peace formula instead of an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine was successful. Ukraine, America and Europe wanted a ceasefire earlier, but Putin's conditions were reflected in the results of the meeting."
