News Topical, Digital Desk : A few days ago, Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir said that Shiites who love Iran so much should go there. His statement has sparked a sectarian and political controversy. Shia religious leaders have described the remarks, made at an Iftar party in Rawalpindi, as insulting and provocative.

Prominent Shia clerics have accused Munir of insulting the community and the military of being subservient to the US and Israel. According to media reports, the Shia clerics have accused the Pakistani military of acting against Pakistan's interests at the behest of the US and Israel and destroying the country by toppling governments.

Allama Syed Sibtain Haider Sabzwari, vice president of the Shia Ulema Council of Pakistan, told Munir, "If you love your masters—Israel and America—so much, then leave Pakistan." Munir's warning to the Shia community comes after protests against the US and Israeli invasion of Iran and the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Earlier this month, at least 35 people were killed in Karachi, Skardu, and Islamabad when security forces cracked down on protesters protesting Khamenei's assassination. These protests were primarily led by Shia members. The Shia community considers Ayatollah Ali Khamenei their supreme religious guide (Marja-e-Taqlid), whose fatwas guide their religious, social, and political activities.

It was after these protests in Pakistan that Munir warned that violence in Pakistan would not be tolerated due to incidents in another country. Munir's "Go to Iran" comment was prominently published by Pakistani media outlets. Pakistani Shia clerics are now reacting strongly to this comment. Shia cleric Allama Muhammad Shifa Najafi released a video saying, "Let me tell you, Jinnah was a Shia."

Shia clerics say the community's grief and anger over Iran is being seen as a question of loyalty to Pakistan. Munir's warning has angered clerics who say Pakistani Shias are deeply connected to the country's history and politics and cannot simply be labeled outsiders or people whose loyalties lie elsewhere.
