A shocking news has come from Malappuram district of Kerala. A two-year-old girl died of suffocation after an airbag opened after a car accident. Police informed about the incident on Sunday. The incident happened on Friday evening, when the girl was going from Kottakkal to Padaparambu with her family members.
According to the police, the car collided with a tanker. Due to the collision, the airbag suddenly opened. During this, the face of the girl sitting in the front seat on her mother's lap got pressed in the airbag. Due to this, she died of suffocation. Police said that the other four passengers including the mother suffered minor injuries.
What is an airbag?
An airbag is a balloon-like cover made of strong fabric that is placed inside the car in front of the driver and passengers. In case of an accident, when the car stops suddenly or collides with an object, the airbag quickly fills with air and inflates. The inflated airbag prevents the driver and passengers from being pushed forward, helping to protect them from serious injuries.
How does an airbag work?
If the vehicle meets with an accident, the nitrogen gas already installed in the SRS system fills the airbag. This entire process takes a few seconds. After this, the airbag inflates and provides safety to the passenger along with better cushioning. The airbag has holes in it, which let out the gas after being deployed.
