Kazan: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Russia. In his first meeting with Modi after being elected as Iran's president in July, Pezeshkian emphasised the need for peace in West Asia and India's role in reducing tensions as it has good relations with all parties.
In this meeting held on the sidelines of the BRICS summit, the two leaders also discussed Chabahar port and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). PM Modi wrote in a post on Instagram that the meeting with President Pezeshkian was good and they reviewed the relations. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that the talks were useful.

Both leaders expressed concern over the ongoing tension in West Asia and India called for the safety of citizens. Misri said that the two leaders also discussed the situation in Afghanistan. The Prime Minister invited the Iranian President to visit India, which he accepted. This meeting between the two leaders has taken place at a time when the conflict between Israel, Hamas and Hezbollah has increased.
Putin and Jinping held a bilateral meeting
It is noteworthy that Modi, concerned with the growing tension, had appealed for a ceasefire in September. Meanwhile, before the BRICS summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping also held a bilateral meeting. Putin also organized a dinner for the leaders invited to the BRICS summit on Tuesday.
Modi received a warm welcome from the Indian community
On his arrival in Kazan, Prime Minister Modi was warmly welcomed by members of the Indian community. They sang songs in Sanskrit and Hindi and also raised slogans of 'Vande Mataram' and 'Bharat Mata ki Jai'. The Prime Minister greeted them with folded hands. Russian artists dressed in traditional Indian attire performed Russian dance in front of the Prime Minister, which he watched with great interest. Some ISKCON members also sang Krishna bhajans.
