
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a visit to Tamil Nadu today on the occasion of Ram Navami. During this, PM Modi has inaugurated the much-awaited New Pamban Rail Bridge. Which is India's first vertical lift sea bridge. This bridge connects the mainland to Rameswaram Island. It is a modern symbol of connectivity and innovation in coastal infrastructure. Along with the inauguration of the New Pamban Rail Bridge, PM Modi has also flagged off the Rameswaram-Tambaram (Chennai) new train service.
The bridge is about 2 kilometers long
Built at a cost of over Rs 700 crore, the 2.08 km long bridge is equipped with 99 spans. It has a state-of-the-art 72.5 meter vertical lift section. This lift mechanism allows it to rise up to 17 meters, allowing ships to pass through it. Also, uninterrupted movement of trains is ensured.
Specially designed
The nearly 2 kilometre long bridge built in the sea has been designed with stainless steel reinforcement, anti-corrosion polysiloxane coating and fully welded joints. This bridge is durable for a long time. It also requires minimal maintenance.
Will lay the foundation stone of road projects
After the inauguration of this bridge, PM Modi will go to Rameswaram to offer prayers at the holy Ramanathaswamy temple. After this, PM Modi is scheduled to lay the foundation stone of rail and road projects worth more than Rs 8,300 crore and dedicate them to the nation.
Expansion of national highway
These developments include major highway (National Highway) expansions aimed at improving connectivity in Tamil Nadu. NH-40 to be four-laned for the 28 km Walajapet-Ranipet section. NH-332 to be four-laned for the 29 km Viluppuram-Puducherry section. NH-32 to be dedicated for the 57 km Poondiyankuppam-Sattanathapuram section. NH-36 to be dedicated for the 48 km Cholapuram-Thanjavur section.
Cultural importance of Rameswaram and PM Modi
During his visit to Tamil Nadu, PM Modi is not only highlighting the cultural importance of Rameswaram. It is believed that according to Ramayana, Ram Setu was built here. PM Modi has also demonstrated a vision for modern infrastructure through his visit, which combines tradition with technology.
