The death toll in rain-triggered floods and landslides in Nepal rose to 122 on Sunday, police said. Large parts of eastern and central Nepal have been submerged since Friday. Flash floods have hit many parts of the country. 

48 people lost their lives in Kathmandu

According to Armed Police Force sources, 64 people are missing due to floods and landslides. 45 people are injured. The Kathmandu Valley has suffered the most casualties at 48. At least 195 houses and eight bridges have been damaged. Security personnel have rescued about 3,100 people. 

Such a devastating flood in the last 45 years

According to eyewitnesses, they have not seen such devastating floods in the Kathmandu Valley in the last 40-45 years. The Armed Police Force said the death toll has risen to 122. At least 19 people were killed when a landslide hit a bus in Dhading district near Kathmandu on Saturday. Five people were killed when a landslide collapsed a house in Bhaktapur city. 

6 football players died in landslide

Six football players lost their lives and others were swept away by floodwaters when a landslide hit a training centre run by the All India Nepal Association in Makawanpur. There was some relief on Sunday despite the rain forecast to continue till Tuesday. 

Rivers flowing above the danger mark

Arun Bhakta Shrestha, a climate and environment specialist at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), said, "I have never seen flooding of this magnitude in Kathmandu before." A report published by ICMOD on Saturday said that Kathmandu's main river Bagmati is flowing above the danger mark after torrential rains in eastern and central Nepal on Friday and Saturday.

The report said that a low pressure situation in the Bay of Bengal and monsoon conditions led to exceptionally heavy rainfall on Saturday. Scientists say that climate change is causing changes in the amount and timing of rainfall across Asia. 

Life came to a standstill

Due to floods and landslides, life has come to a standstill in many parts of Nepal. Many highways and roads are closed. Hundreds of houses and bridges have been washed away and hundreds of families have been displaced. Thousands of travellers are stranded at various places due to road closures.
