Violence has once again intensified in Manipur. In Imphal on Saturday, protesters stormed the residences of two ministers and three MLAs and demanded justice for the killing of three people in Jiribam district.
The Imphal West administration has imposed indefinite curfew in the district following mob attacks on the houses of MLAs. According to an order issued by Imphal West District Magistrate T Kirankumar, the curfew was imposed from 4.30 pm on Saturday. A senior official told PTI that the mob stormed the residence of Health and Family Welfare Minister Sapam Ranjan in Lamphel Sanakethel area.
'Then the minister will resign'
"Sapam assured us that the issues related to the killing of three persons will be discussed in the cabinet meeting and if the government fails to respect the sentiments of the people, the minister will tender his resignation," David, a representative of Lamphel Sanakethel Development Authority, told reporters. Another senior official said protesters also stormed the house of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Minister L Susindro Singh.
Sloganeering outside the residence of BJP MLA
In Sagolband area of Imphal West district, the protesters gathered in front of the residence of BJP MLA RK Imo, who is also the son-in-law of Chief Minister N Biren Singh, and raised slogans. He demanded a proper response from the government on the killing of three people and urged the officials to arrest the culprits within 24 hours.
A senior official told the agency that protesters who had come to meet independent MLA of Keshamthong constituency Sapam Nishikant Singh at his residence on Tiddim Road targeted the office building of a local newspaper owned by him. He claimed that the mob destroyed some temporary structures in front of the office building.
Tension spread after the bodies of three people were found
Three bodies were found near the confluence of the Jiri and Barak rivers on the Manipur-Assam border on Friday night, suspected to be those of the six missing persons from Jiribam district. The bodies of a woman and two children were found about 16 km from Borobekra in Jiribam district, close to the spot where the six persons went missing on Monday.
