Dominican Nightclub Disaster: A major accident happened in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday (April 8) night. The roof of a nightclub in the capital Santo Domingo suddenly collapsed, killing about 79 people and injuring more than 160 people. 

There were 500 to 1000 people present in the club at the time of the accident. As soon as the roof collapsed, there was chaos. Many people were buried under the debris, who are still being searched. Rescue work is underway and the injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals. Relief teams are continuously trying to remove the debris and take out the trapped people.

People are still trapped in the debris 

Juan Manuel Mendez, head of the emergency operations center, said that he believes that many people may still be alive under the rubble. He said, "We will keep trying until everyone is safely evacuated." Mendez said that so far 44 people have been confirmed dead. Officials also said that Montecristi Governor Nelcy Cruz is also among those killed. Apart from this, former Major League Baseball player Octavio Dotel has died in the accident.

Singer Ruby Perez also died

The accident happened when famous merengue singer Ruby Perez was performing in a nightclub. His manager Enrique Paulino said that the concert started at around 12 o'clock on Monday and Tuesday night and about an hour later the roof of the nightclub collapsed. Singer Ruby Perez also died in this accident. Manager Paulino said, "All this happened suddenly. At first it felt like an earthquake. I somehow saved my life by going to a corner." After the accident, Paulino's shirt was soaked with blood.

The President expressed grief over the accident

Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader has expressed deep sorrow over the nightclub accident. He wrote on the social media platform 'X' (formerly Twitter), "We are deeply saddened by the accident at the Jet Set nightclub. We have been monitoring this incident every minute since the beginning."

The President said that all rescue agencies are working hard so that the victims can get help as soon as possible. Abinader himself reached the accident site, met the people present there and talked to those who were searching for their loved ones. However, he did not talk to the media. It is not clear at the moment why the roof of the nightclub collapsed. Investigation is ongoing.
